Backups, and how to restore a file or your whole site

Your cPanel account is backed up nightly and the last 7 days are kept, with a copy at a second site; you restore from cPanel's own Backup and File and Directory Restoration tools.

What we back up

Every cPanel hosting account is backed up nightly by cPanel's own backup system. The last 7 days of backups are kept, and a copy is kept at a second site. Our systems check every day that the hosting server still runs that schedule and tell our team if it does not.

Our backups exist so you can recover from our failures or from a mistake. Keep your own copy of anything important as well; the Backups card on your service page says the same.

Restore a file, a folder or a database

  1. Open your hosting service in the client area, the Manage tab, and press Log in to cPanel.
  2. In cPanel, open File and Directory Restoration (under Files). Browse to the file or folder, pick the date, and restore it.
  3. For a database, open Backup and restore a database backup there. Restoring replaces what is there now.

Restore the whole account

Open a ticket with the account's domain and the date you want to go back to. We restore the account from that night's backup. Restoring replaces everything in the account as of that date, including email.

What backups do not cover

  • A service that has ended. When a service is terminated (after cancellation, or after 30 days unpaid), its data is kept for 7 days and then deleted for good, backups included. See Overdue, suspended, terminated.
  • Changes made in the last day, before the next nightly run.

Taking your own backup

In cPanel, Backup → Download a Full Account Backup produces an archive you can keep elsewhere. Do this before a migration, a big change, or cancelling.
